During enzyme induction, the activity of an enzyme is increased by other drugs. Its effect is therefore increased and the substances degraded by it lose their effect faster than normal. This must be anticipated by the doctor so that the necessary plasma levels can be achieved by higher doses. On the other hand, drugs can also promote the elimination of other drugs by the kidneys by shortening their retention time in the renal tubules. Diuretics, for example, have this effect and thus reduce the chances of other drugs being reabsorbed. Further interaction possibilities arise in the event of a pharmacologically induced interruption of the enterohepatic circulation or an inhibition of transport into the bile.
