Organ of Taste

The organ of taste has no closed structure. Its approximately 2000 taste buds are located in the tissues of the tongue and palate, the epiglottis and the upper esophagus.

Most of them are located in the mucous membrane of the moats on the tongue. At the top of the taste bud there is a depression, which opens into the surface through an opening, the taste gate. Liquid with the substance to be tasted passes through this opening and washes around the sensory cells.

The taste cells are chemoreceptors whose mode of action is still unclear in detail, but we can distinguish sweet, salty, acidic and bitter nutrients from each other.
