Main Function of the Colon

Although the large intestine and rectum do perform a function in the digestive tract, they are not vital organs. In cases of colorectal cancer, where parts of the colon have to be surgically removed, the remaining part of the colon takes over the task without any significant disadvantage for the patient. Even in cases where the entire colon and rectum must be removed, this is not a health hazard for the patient. The bowel movement becomes more fluid and more frequent as the colon's thickening and storage function is no longer necessary.
