Monocyte

Large leukocyte, amoeboid phagocyte or macrophage.

A monocyte is the largest white blood cell ∅ 10-24 μm) resulting from the promonocyte with a large, mostly lobed and irregularly shaped nucleus. Is rich in enzyme and capable of migration and phagocytosis (see also Macrophages). Their blood residence time is 12-24 hours. The number in the peripheral blood (of the adult) is 80-590/μl.
